I was in shopping spree and with some hefty bags on my hand, I turned my attention towards a emporium of home furnishing items . As I entered it, I was lost in a sea of colorful carpets, cushion covers, curtains, pillows, pillow covers, beautifully designed bed covers, quilts, table covers and other exquisitely designed wooden furniture. The quilt section grabbed my attention. To undertand the quality of Rajasthani quilts, one has to touch them to feel how unbelievably light and soft they are. Known as razais, the quilts of Rajasthan are avaailable in bright hues having the traditional Sanganeri prints, applique work and marble prints.

There the covers of pillow and cushion are embellished with hand block prints or delicate prints done by hand with vegetable dye. Hand block printing is the eco-friendly, traditional way of putting colors and designs on textile by soaking wooden blocks in various colors. The hand prints are characterised by floral motifs, but in Barmer, there still exists the unique Rajasthani ajrakh prints. I found some of the covers and table mats adorned with light zari work! Perfect for the home of the Maharajahs!

I was tempted to buy half of the shop, but at last contented myself with two brightly colored bed covers and few cushion covers beautified with block prints.
